Join us to make our voices heard at city hall for the MPDs - TopicsExpress

Join us to make our voices heard at city hall for the MPDs presentation on their plan for increased accountability as we push for concrete policy changes to ensure an immediate end to the unjust police murders of unarmed Black people and for Minneapolis to take measures to eliminate our worst in the country racial disparities. We expect the findings and recommendations on police accountability, which still have not been released to the public, will fall woefully short of the real solutions needed to protect our communities. Therefore we will continue to push for demands generated by hundreds of community members over the past months and years, and make sure the MPD, the city council, and the Mayor hear them loud and clear. ********** OUR DEMANDS: 1. Adopt policies to end racial profiling by law enforcement. 2. Repeal local ordinances that criminalize petty conduct such as lurking, loitering and spitting on sidewalks,” which are used to racially profile, cite, and harass people of color. 3. Require all law enforcement officers to take implicit bias and cultural competency training. 4. Establish an independent community review board for police departments, with full disciplinary powers. 5. Increase the number of officers that live in the communities they serve and immediately repeal the 1990 Stanek Residency Freedom Bill. 6. De-militarize local law enforcement 7. Limit the use of deadly force by law enforcement. 8. Quarterly reporting: Track and report to the public lawsuits, settlements, and complaints related to excessive force by police. Track and report to the public racial demographics of low level arrests. 9. Statewide adoption of body cameras. Develop policies with input from the public to address when cameras are turned on and off, data storage, and effective protocols for review of data to ensure accountability. 10. Call on Bloomington City Attorney Sandra Johnson and the Mall of America to drop the outrageous charges and requests for restitution for lost revenue and police overtime being threatened against organizers of our peaceful gathering at the Mall of America. ********** On January 28, 2015 in room 333 of City Hall, at 1:00 PM, the MPD will host a final presentation by the Diagnostic Center on the findings of their assessment and implementation plans to enhance the Department’s accountability procedures. The final assessment report includes: · Analysis of complaints filed against MPD police officers from 2008-2013 · Perceptions of stakeholders and community members and areas identified for improvements · Recommendations for increasing transparency and community trust and knowledge of MPDs conduct and oversight process · Recommendations for improving police-community relations Chief Harteau will discuss the implementation plan that will move the MPD forward to implement changes to enhance police performance, transparency, and public trust.
