Joke Joke Joke ..... Special ON #THE AFRICAN PORTAL # From his love of Fanta floats to his disenchantment with cabbage, funnyman and Emmy-award nominee Loyiso Gola shares some of his food insights. My earliest food memory would have to be when I first ate a scone that my gran made. I had it with butter and jam and I was, like, whaaaaat? My mom’s trifle was definitely one of my favourites growing up, but nothing beat a Fanta float. I mean, what kid doesn’t like ice cream in Fanta? If I have children one day, that’s what I’m going to make them to drink. I’ve thrown away my microwave. I hate the way we’ve become so reliant on technology. I was at the American embassy yesterday and they told us to switch off our phones. People didn’t know what to do with themselves. I can cook. I can make roast lamb and chicken and all that, but because I don’t have a lot of time I usually buy dishes that are half prepared so I can just pop them in the oven. I don’t get prickly pears. They aren’t incredibly friendly with all those thorns, are they? The tomato is also a mystery. It calls itself a fruit but doesn’t even hang out with all the other fruit at the supermarket. What’s that all about? One vegetable you’ll never find on my plate is cabbage. It tastes horrible. Not even Jamie Oliver or Gordon Ramsay can make it taste good to me. The weirdest thing I ever ate was a durian fruit in Thailand. The taste is pretty bland, but a few days after you eat it you start smelling really bad. It’s such an issue that most hotels over there have a durian insurance policy – you have to pay a deposit in the event that you eat it and render the room uninhabitable for the next guest. If I want to spoil the special lady in my life, I’ll make her my seafood pasta with Peppadew pesto and serve it with a chilled glass of Haute Cabrière Chardonnay Pinot Noir. I would say I eat to live, not the other way around. I’m a very practical eater. This morning, I just put some fruit in a blender with peanut butter, yoghurt and cereal. I figured it has all the nutrients to get me through the day. I can’t really say what my ideal last meal on earth would be. I mean, if I knew I was having my last moments on Earth, the last thing on my mind would be eating.
