Joke Writing Intensive: The Mechanics of Pro Joke Writing and Creating a Writer’s Sample Packet Sunday, July 19, 2-5 pm Want to write comedy well enough to get paid to do it? Then take this one-day intensive that covers the mechanics of professional joke writing and how to put together a professional joke writer’s sample packet. The job of a pro writer is to create jokes that literally never fail. Every joke has to be a kill line. That’s why people pay for what a comedy writer does, because the jokes always work. To get jokes to the always-kills level, you need two things: (1) the ability to go through the world finding super nova flashes of “Oh, that’s funny”; and (2) the writing ability to turn those noticings into perfectly scripted jokes. I can’t teach you how to notice funny, but I can definitely teach you how to script funny. You will learn things like: professional joke structures developing a writer’s mind micro-editing rewriting during live rehearsal capturing someone’s “voice” writing jokes that will be picked up by the media After the class is over each student gets three “feedback sessions” with me via email, where I evaluate jokes you’ve written, show you how to punch them up, and help you put them into a sample packet you can use to get work. I’m Dan French, I’ve been a late night staff writer for Dennis Miller, The Late, Late Show on CBS, and The Best Damn Sports Show Period. I was also a contract writer for Letterman, George Lopez, and Wanda Sykes. I’ve written for hundreds of standups, including big name guys like Billy Gardell (CBS’s “Mike and Molly”), Ron White, Rodney Carrington, Jimmy Shubert. And I’ve been a headlining club and corporate standup for, um, ever? Cost: $125 Date: Sunday, July 19, 2-5 pm Location: to be announced To register, email Dan at procomedytraining@gmail.
