Jokes Apart Chief Akin Omoboriowo was a premiership player in the politics of the old Ondo State during the heady days of the Second Republic. In 1983, the NPN-controlled federal government attempted to rig the Ondo gubernatorial election in favour of Omoboriowo who had dumped the Obafemi AWOLOWO-led Unity Party of Nigeria. The attempted rigging triggered a violent but spontaneous civil unrest and the NPN riggers became wanted hunted men losing limbs and properties to the angry mob. Some, like Chief Fagbamigbe of Fagbamigbe Publishers paid the supreme price but Chief Omoboriowo luckily fled. The daylight robbery and its reward arguably catalysed the Buhari-Idiagbon putsch. After the heat had settled, the prodigal NPN men trooped back home. Our boys wan come greet you for house that time, a prominent UPN thug told Omoboriowo, but you no dey. Dem say you go on AWOL. Who say I run go AWOLOWO during the riot, Omoboriowo answered, na NPN national headquarters I run go o.
