Jolovan translated some of the contract terms of the Shan Jian Xin Construction employment contracts: The 3 workers from Shan Jian Xin Construction Pte Ltd who lodged a complaint at MOM were given a 6 page contract to sign. I’ve picked out some of the more ridiculous aspects of the agreement. Please share this widely and write to the company at [email protected] to register your objections, and to the Minister of Manpower at [email protected] to investigate this company. 1) The worker shall accept ‘unconditional punishment’ if he does not adhere to the company’s regulations. Punishments include deductions to wages and fines amounting up to $500. One of the regulations is ‘Total obedience to supervisor’s orders’ 2) The worker may be fined by the company if he breaks any of Singapore’s laws. 3) The worker allows the company to deduct $120 from his salary for insurance premiums. 4) If the worker wishes to re-new his contract, he shall pay a one year extension fee which will be deducted from his salary. 5) If the worker dies in Singapore and whatever the cause of death, the worker’s family is not allowed to come to Singapore to deal with matters here. If they arrive in Singapore on their own accord, they will have to incur their own expenses. 6) The worker works fully for the whole year without rest. On this basis, the worker will work as required by the employer, meet the skill requirements, and accomplish tasks and output according to schedule. The worker requests to work on public holidays and Sundays. The worker must be proficient, industrious, and obey the leadership. The employer will give 7 to 14 days probation period to the worker. If his skills are not up to standard, he shall be repatriated and the worker shall pay for the air ticket and other associated costs incurred by the company. 7) Medical expenses which are not work related will be deducted from the employee’s wages. The employee is not entitled to wages while on MC. If it is found that the worker has the following illnesses, he will be repatriated and bear the cost of his own air ticket: hepatitis, pulmonary disease, heart problems, and high blood pressure. 9) The worker must give 6 month’s notice if he wishes to resign. Or else, he has to pay $6000 salary in lieu of notice.
