Joma Sala League Mid Season Review After five rounds and regrading of the U14s, some interesting results have taken place. In the U12 Championship, the Bayside Pirates Destroyers and the Roma Mustangs were neck and neck at the top. Saturdays clash was not quite a six pointer, but it would provide breathing space for the winner. The Roma Mustangs were the overall U10 JSL Champions from last year and have stepped up into the U12 Division with aplomb. Coached by Chas Di Petta, they look like the team to beat, with their fluid passing style and clinical finishing in front of goal. The Pirates were at full strength with new players coming into the team for this year’s competition. The Pirates came out of the blocks with their pressing game and were 2-0 up in double quick time. They did not allow the Mustangs to get into their rhythm and it took quite a while before they got on the score sheet. The youngest (aged 10) and smallest Pirate, Luc Evans, is the cat between the sticks. For one so young, he belies his age and statue. He certainly thrives in that position, with his shot stopping, ball distribution and game sense. The Pirates were leading at the break through goals from Jordan Bates, Lachlan Gill and Oscar Blanco, who were combining very well in attack. Jayden De Jong was also having an excellent game playing the Anchor role. Using his height to great affect, he cut out any long balls and passed the ball with power and accuracy. The Pirates were a bit slow off the mark in the second half and allowed the Mustangs to get within one goal. However, two quick goals in succession, settled their nerves and they ran out 7-4 winners in a pulsating game. It was pleasing to see five different goal scorers, who were Bates, Blanco, De Jong, Gill and Greta Jowett-Smith. Evans played well between the sticks; Margaret Bradbury was solid in defence, with some fantastic line passing and newbie, Jeffrey Guan, was tenacious in his tackling. Over all, it was a very good team effort. For the Mustangs, Alex Draganavic was a real handful for the Pirates with his ball skills and goal scoring prowess. Not bad for a ten year old! The other game between Brighton SC and Real Utd was also close, with Brighton coming out on top 3-2. Oliver Caminiti picked up three MVP votes for this game, as he played really well in goal. Brighton’s Samuel Reid picked up Brighton’s 3 MVP votes for his efforts. Not much between the teams in this league. Pirates are on top with 12 points, Roma Mustangs are in second on 9 points, Brighton SC third on 6 and Real Utd are on 3 points. Before the regrading Sandringham Bombers were the clear leaders of Division 2 and Caulfield Cobras FC were the ones to beat in Division 1. After the redraw, the Bombers got promoted along with Caulfield Cobras Red into the new La Liga 1. Brighton SC and the Sharks dropped down to Liga 2. First up Eat My Shorts beat Brighton SC 5-3 in a close encounter. James Vargiu got the 3 MVP votes for Eat My Shorts and Daniel Toll of Brighton got three votes as well. The other game was one sided as the Sharks beat Caulfield Cobras Yellow 19-4. Tougher games will be coming up for the Sharks, especially against Eat My Shorts. In La Liga 1, two games stood out. Newly promoted Sandringham Bombers were up against the Bentleigh Green Glory. The Glory was in fine form, as were the Bombers, so the game promised to be intense and close. It duly was. The scores were locked at 1-1 at halftime. But it was flank player Joel Amartey who unlocked the key of the committed Glory defence that proved the difference. Amartey and Jack Athanis combined well to give the Bombers the edge with a hard fought 3-1 win. The favourites for this year’s title had a hic up on Saturday. In another end to end pulsating game they lost to Bentleigh Greens Gamers, 4-3. The half time score was 3-1 to the Gamers, as the Cobras looked a bit shaken up. To their credit, they never gave up, in what was a terrific game, but it was the Gamers day as they held on to win the match. The Bayside Pirates Growlers looked comfortable with a 9-0 win over newly promoted Caulfield Cobras Red. Joseph Onika, the young Solomon Islander, lit up the court with his dazzling displays of ball control and “Falcao” styled flicks and tricks. Joseph is in Melbourne for three months, but he normally plays for the Paramartyr Kingz in Honiara. He is in Melbourne on a Futsal Scholarship, which has been set up by the Kingz and the Pirates. He plays for the Growlers and then steps up and plays with the Youth team. He also played two games for the Pirates in the FFV Premier League earlier in the year, where he helped beat Pascoe Vale 4-3 in an epic match. Onika combined well with Michael Stergiotis and Jared Laida. Dylan Trevethick was solid in goal, deputising for the absent Number 1 Georg Tzamouranis. Kieran Moroney and Luke Myszka played the Anchor role well, with flank players Rebecca Niclasen and Liam McGrath, applying their pace to great effect. Goal scorers were Onika, 3, Laida, 3, Niclasen 2 and Stergiotis 1. The Growlers will have to be more clinical in front of goal if they are to do well against the tougher teams. Next week they meet the newly promoted Bombers in an all ready Top of the Table clash. The Youth League has the Joma Jaguars battling it out with the Bayside Pirates Sabres, with the Sabres in front by a point. Some games are played on the Show Court to give players the experience of playing futsal on the larger court, which they ordinarily wouldn’t get the chance to do. The Sabres are using the JSL as extra Game based training for the Craig Foster Tournament in January. The Sabres team features some Victorian Youth players and combined with the seniors, will make up the Pirates Senior Fire team for the Craig Foster Tournament. The Jaguars were too good for Brighton SC, winning 12-3, while the Pirates beat My Luck is Many 7-1. Brighton and My Luck is Many have played out some good games and it will be interesting to see who finishes in third place. Brighton has the potential to do well, as they fought back from 3 goals down to draw with the Pirates 7-7 in last week’s game. So we are at the mid way point of the Joma Sala League. It is to early to say who is going to win what division. One thing is for certain, we have another six weeks of fabulous futsal coming up!
