Jon Mertz posted a very good article and summary of the coal field conflicts and specifically the execution of the alleged "Molly Maquires". Excellent read: I recommend it. I started to think about the executions of Native Americans and African American Slaves and started to research that. Finding the information will take some time. I guess my point is that even now, with the distance of time, we still hide information and that hiding, may or may not be purposeful, but the result is the same. What was done to Native Americans and done to Slaves was for the most part legal under the laws of the land at those times. It was certainly part of a heated debate over the morality such killing and brutality; it tore communities apart and set groups into armed conflict. Many would prefer we do not think about that anymore and some want to redefine what the American Civil War was about rather than acknowledge that their own ancestors could have participated in such brutality. The American labor movement also saw a great deal of brutality and at times there was true open warfare, mob violence, murder and mayhem. We have short memories, selective memories, all fed by a mixture of sound bytes and propaganda motivated by the interests of a few usually to promote the wealth of power of a few. History is not simple, it is not a 90 minute movie in a theater, it is not a photo opportunity. Think of how much further along we could all be without that waste of human lives and destruction of the land. Peace
