Jonah 3:1-10; Luke 11:29-32 Set out for the great city of Nineveh, and announce to it the message that I will tell you. For Jonah, Nineveh represented all that was evil and wrong in the world. Nineveh was the capital of the Assyrian empire, and Assyria was one of Israels enemies. Jonah wanted to see the Ninevites destroyed, not saved, so he probably didnt preach Gods message with much conviction. Nevertheless, Jonah proclaimed Gods message of impending doom and destruction and the entire city repented. Everyone put on sackcloth and ashes and God decided not to destroy Nineveh after all. Youd think Jonah would be pleased that his preaching was so effective, but he is furious. He wanted those terrible Ninevites to get what he thought they deserved. He knew that God was loving and merciful - but heaven forbid that God should be loving and merciful to them! When we are like Jonah, O God, remind us of the breadth of your love. - Jeanne Lischer
