Jonathan has lost it already; as even prominient PDP members campaign for Buhari’s presidency As the 2015 general elections approach, a new twist has been introduced to campaign system in the Northern part of the country with the Peoples Democratic Party candidates campaigning for the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd). Findings in the part of the country revealed that most elite have distanced themselves from openly associating with the second term aspiration of President Goodluck Jonathan-led PDP campaigns for fear of being tagged dissident. Prior to the formation of President Jonathan campaign team, the more favoured North-West elite turned their appointments down as the atmosphere among the teeming populace in the region does not favour the PDP presidential candidate. It was gathered that it took the intervention of many high-ranking officials from the region to convince the former party national chairman, Dr Ahmadu Alli, to accept the challenge against the more favoured younger elite. The medium gathered that some of the PDP candidates in the North now have to use Buhari’s posters to support their aspiration, especially in Niger State, where the incumbent governor, Dr. Babangida Aliyu, who is now contesting for the Senate had to use the APC candidate’s poster as a backup. Similarly, the governorship candidate of the party used Buhari’s picture as a backup campaign with the inscription ‘Vote Buhari for Unity and Progress’. It was also gathered that the vice- presidential candidate of the PDP, Architect Namadi Sambo, was booed by residents of Kaduna State when he was in the state for a political gathering and almost got mobbed, but for his security details. The situation is similar in other states in the region, as many politicians of repute within the PDP fold did not want to be publicly associated with President Jonathan’s ambition. It was gathered that things are not fine within the president’s camp, as there is no total trust among the people working to achieve the same objective, especially the northern elements in the party.
