Jonathan insinuates that ASUU strike has been politicized President Goodluck Jonathan has stated that the ASUU strike is continuing because most issues in Nigeria has been politicised, pointing out that in the history of ASUU strike, no government has made commitments like his administration before such strikes were called off. Speaking during the Presidential Media Chat, Jonathan regretted that the ASUU strike has been reduced to earned allowances for university lecturers. The President noted that the earned allowances are supposed to be paid by the respective universities, with the Federal Government only coming in to assist. Jonathan said though the Federal Government has released N30billion for the earned allowances, the lecturers are insisting on everything being paid. He pointed out that the matter was beyond the 100 percent payment of the allowances at present, stressing that after the present situation, the governing councils of the universities will be expected to pay the allowances. The president noted that on that score, future strikes will still take place. “Earned allowances ought to be paid through the internally generated revenue of the universities. Whether we pay the earned allowances or not, they will still go strike. Autonomy without responsibility is a potential for crisis. Its not compulsory that we pay earned allowances, we only assist”, Jonathan said. The President stated that the issue of NEEDS Assessment was an idea of his administration to know the developmental challenges of the universities. He said setting up the assessment of the universities indicate that the Federal Government is committed to improving infrastructure in the universities. On the sympathy strike that state universities embarked upon, Jonathan said that this is regrettable as the state universities are owned by the states. He said that in a Federal system, it was disheartening that the schools in the states have been on strike. “Why then should state universities go on strike? We must begin to ask questions”, he said.
