Jonathan seeks collaboration among West African countries President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday made a case for a strategic collaboration among countries in the West African sub region to control and contain the dreaded Ebola Virus. He said the collaboration was necessary to check the spread of the virus and further threat to human lives. A statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, quoted the President as speaking while receiving in audience the new Ambassador of Guinea to Nigeria, Mr. Gaoussou Toure. Toure was in the Presidential Villa, Abuja, to present his letters of credence to the President. Guinea is one of the African countries currently being ravaged by the Ebola virus. Jonathan reportedly commended the containment measures so far taken by West African countries that have been affected by the disease. He stressed that more concerted intra-regional cooperation and action needs to be developed. “A problem that affects one of us affects all. We may need to come together as a region to strengthen our containment measures. I am however pleased that serious measures are being taken to control the spread of the disease,” Jonathan was quoted as saying. The new ambassador was said to have earlier thanked the President for the financial assistance given to Guinea by Nigeria to tackle the virus. He assured Jonathan that Guinea is deploying containment measures to combat the outbreak. He also reaffirmed Guinea’s commitment to strengthening the country’s cordial relations with Nigeria. Also speaking at separate audiences after receiving letters of credence from the new Ambassador of Germany, Michael Peter Zenner and the new Ambassador of Denmark, Torben Antonio Gettermann, Jonathan insisted that the days of electoral violence in Nigeria are over. He further promised that the 2015 general elections will be free and fair. The President called on the two ambassadors to use their positions to strengthen the existing trade relations between their countries and Nigeria.
