Jordan Henderson is a Liverpool FC captain in the waiting Aug 03, 2014 Hendo will learn from Steven Gerrard and could be a major contender for the armband when Stevie steps aside When you consider the first season Jordan Henderson had in a Liverpool FC shirt it was clear the transfer fee was weighing heavy on his shoulders. It’s taken him a while to look like the player worth £16million but he was outstanding last year. Now, though, Brendan Rodgers has set him the task of pushing on from last season and has given the target of scoring 10 goals, which is perfectly possible for a player of his quality. Once you start scoring you get the bug. You come off the pitch normally and you think ‘did I pass people in’ or ‘did I chase back enough’ but with a goal it’s a massive thing. Henderson will know that he is pacey and because he makes such long runs it makes it incredibly difficult to pick him up. Once you realise that you can score in certain positions he will be thinking he can get a few. His role in this Liverpool team now is huge. You only have to look at how much he was missed at the back end of last season when he was suspended and you compare that with his first season and that is a massive statement in itself. The thing is, having Steven Gerrard alongside him is huge. We know Stevie is a big fan of Henderson’s and it is easy to see why. But if you can’t learn from such an outstanding player like the skipper you’ve never going to develop. It’s inevitable he will learn from him but I think one of the important things about playing alongside him is that Henderson will better understand that position. And with being in midfield you’ve just got to be in the right position because it makes you job so much easier. When Steven does retire – granted that won’t be for a couple more years – I seriously think Henderson is a contender to take that role. If you are the manager and you’re picking the captain you want to choose someone who is playing every week. At the moment, Henderson is one of the first names down every week and that will certainly come into Brendan’s mind. But with the players Liverpool have signed there is a lot of competition in midfield and that’s why it will be a big year for him. He’s a proper North East boy, though, and he understands what football is all about. Sunderland are a big club and there is argument about that – obviously he’s gone to an even bigger one but he’s shown he can handle that type of pressure. And he’s clearly a good lad because people talk so positively about him. He’s got a chance of having an outstanding career here so he’s just got to grasp the nettle again this year and kick on with a few more goals.
