Jordan is an Arab state. Its borders were drawn by Britain and France in the Middle East after World War I. It has Israel as its western neighbour, while to the east and south lies the vast desert of Arabia. The capital, Amman, is built on hills. It has the colour and sounds of a typical Arab city, but it is modest in size and appearance and is not dominated by high-rise buildings. To the south-west of Amman you can drive from the hills further and further down to the lowest place on Earth, the Dead Sea. It is 395 metres below the level of the Mediterranean and other seas. The Dead Sea is so salty that no fish can live in it. If you go in, there is no chance of sinking.
