Jorge Luis Borges wrote that to think is to generalize, to abstract. Knee-jerk types disagree. But if the child burns his hand on the yellow stove at his aunts house, he doesnt have to re-test the issue with the white stove at his grandmothers house. He generalizes. He *thinks.* (See how I used the child there to get around gender bias...? Not sure why language majors struggle with this when theres such an easy solution for most cases....) As someone with no interest in mundane details (Erma, Elma, and Myrna are not only the same name to me, but the same person! Ditto any Kevin and Steve - yes, you are all the same) I find people hung up on specificity very frustrating. They require paragraphs when a word or a glance should suffice.
