Josephine Teo, the Senior Minister of State for Finance, explained in parliament that the lower-income households have received GST rebates worth approximately 90% of the total GST they would have paid last year. One major issue with the way this is being explained is the fact that the government is calculating how much the needy receive in terms of how much tax they pay. If we want to live in an inclusive society where no one is left behind, it should not matter at all that the benefits the less well-off in society receive are more than the taxes they pay.
