Josey Stephen Cary, a former fine arts student at the University of Maine at Machias, will hold an exhibit of his internationally acclaimed photography from December to February at UMM’s art gallery. Cary, who lives in Machias, is a well respected and prolific photographer. There will be a reception with Cary from 5-7 p.m. Friday, December 5,at the art gallery in Powers Hall and his show will run until February 6. Jan Weiss of Art Plant describes Cary’s work: “Dark and creepy but intriguing and somewhat mystical. Maybe carrying thoughts of the underworld and what happens and the solitude of that space that no one really knows about but they sometimes feel it – in a dark corner…or just around a building where you can’t see it but it feels ominous? That’s how I feel when viewing the work of Josey Cary. There is something around the corner and I hesitate – not wanting to look but then again…I must know.” In July of 2014, The renowned Saatchi Gallery named Cary one of the world’s 46 Top Emerging Photographers when his work was chosen by the Saatchis Chief Curator Rebecca Wilson for the gallerys “Hot Shots” photography collection. His work was one of thirty chosen worldwide for the Exposure 14 Collection; a worldwide photography competition held by the See.Me arts group. In 2009 he was the only American to be chosen for “Reification: The Tony Wilson Experience” in Manchester, England, an event curated by designer Peter Saville, and members of Joy Division and New Order. Cary is the most published photographer by the Impossible Project, with over 480 photographs. The Impossible Project has also featured nine of his photographs in various collections. His work was also featured in the “Times Square Takeover” show in the summer of 2014 in New York City, during which his photographs were projected onto the largest billboard in Times Square for forty-eight hours.
