Josiah and Renondeau win at Speightstown 9/26/2013 By Michael Phillips With none of the usual winners in the pack, Oein Josiah came away with the top spot in the first race of the Co-operators General Insurance/National Sports Council 5K Road Race Series. Taking place this past weekend in Speightstown, Josiah led the rest of the field home clocking 18 minutes flat. Starting and finishing at the esplanade in the northern parish, last Sunday’s race saw Josiah having to let it all hang out to beat Mark Greenidge. Greenidge, who usually finds himself in the in the top ten in road races, finished just behind Josiah in 18:06 minutes for second place. With the pair putting some distance between them and the rest of the field, Richard Lewis was the next runner in at 19:32 minutes. Hot on Lewis’ heels was Philip Gaskin, who was only three seconds behind at the end of the run which took the participants throughout the environs of the historically rich town. Ralf Luthor closed out the top five with a performance of 20:21 minutes. The small field of on 25 males and 16 females all finished the course in under an hour with only a few of the men going over the half hour mark. The women were also keenly contested as Carley Pipe was forced to take a back seat to Elizabeth Renondeau. Renondeau, who recently was held to third place finish in the Customs and Excise Department Annual 5K, exacted her revenge on Pipe who won the event. She finished the course in 20:18 while her training partner, Pipe, crossed the line at 21:07. Dominating last year’s series, Pipe will be looking to bounce back in the remaining events this year. Donna Gibbs was third in the ladies with 23:37 while fourth and fifth went to Lydia Luthor (26:55) and Cheryl Edwards (28:01). All top contenders will be expected at this weekend’s running of the Central Zone. Beginning and ending at the Bay Street Esplanade, the course will traverse much of Historic Bridgetown. A prize of $1 000.00 is up for grabs to any person that can break a 21 year-old record which is currently held by Leo Garnes.
