Joslin Diabetes Center is looking for participants for its PERL study – a three-year, multi-center study evaluating whether a medication called allopurinol may help prevent the loss of #kidney function that sometimes occurs among people with #type1diabetes. The study involves 17 visits to Joslin over a 3 year period and taking two allopurinol or inactive pills twice a day during this period. Study procedures will include blood tests, urine tests, and other medical tests to monitor kidney function. All medical procedures and medications are at no cost to the participant. Monetary compensation is available. Recruitment: Male or female patients aged 18-65 who: 1). Have been diagnosed with type 1 #diabetes before age 35 2). Have had diabetes for more than 8 years 3). Have been told by their physician that they have kidney problems related to their diabetes, such as increased amounts of proteins in their urine.
