Journalist Naomi Wolf made the following apology this morning which, I believe, has parallel implications / inspiration for nonIndigenous Australians who wish to live with a clear conscious in our home country… What do you think? I kind of feel I need to issue a formal apology. I knew about Gaza but never really looked at Gaza. Who knows whether unconsciously I did not want to really look because looking means one has - or at least I have -- to cross a divide that involves no going back in some ways -- at least, no going back to certain kinds of much more comfortable ignorance. Really looking at Gaza, for a Jew and for someone who wants to believe that Israel has some integrated moral standing, creates a crisis in identity and a crisis of conscience. The more I look the worse things appear and the more alien the emotional landscape around me. But I should have really looked...long ago.
