Journalists in the US (at Slate, the New Yorker and others) who think Charlie Hebdo is racist have absolutely no idea of what they are talking about. In reality, CH is one the most vociferous anti-racist forces in the French press. It is very easy to mis-interpret some of the cartoons as racist if you dont know the story behind them and you dont understand the kind of 2nd degree humor practiced by CH (for an attempt at explaining this, look here: 67-tardis-street.tumblr/post/107589955860/dear-us-followers ). As Robert Crumbs just told the New York Observer, when asked about how Americans dont get CHs merciless, offensive, and insulting political satire: It’s a French thing, yeah, and they value that very highly here. You would not have gotten 3.7 million French people in the street today to defend CH if there were any hint of racism in its pages (thats about 6% of the total population of France!). CH ridicules every form of indoctrination and totalitarianism, whether its fascist, communist, nationalist, or religious, particularly when it causes human suffering. Thats why the targets are often organized religions and the far-right. slate/articles/news_and_politics/politics/2015/01/charlie_hebdo_the_french_satirical_magazine_is_heroic_it_is_also_racist.html newyorker/news/news-desk/le-pens-moment?intcid=mod-most-popular (Hmm, just saw that Patrick has a very similar post).
