Journos offered money at press meet Staff Correspondent, Ctg, Thursday, June 06, 2013 Journalists at a press conference in the port city yesterday were offered money by the personal secretary to the chairman of Chittagong Development Authority (CDA). Many of the journalists, including The Daily Star correspondent, refused to take the money handed out in yellow envelopes because they said it was unethical. The CDA organised the event in its conference room to announce an awareness campaign that begins tomorrow. The campaign is intended to promote public awareness about the building code and a development plan in the city. Tareque Gani, personal secretary to CDA Chairman MA Salam, was seen distributing the envelopes after the conference and referring to the money as “token transport fares” for journalists. The chairman and other high-ups of the CDA were present at the conference. But Salam was not on the scene when the money was being distributed. Contacted, Salam told The Daily Star that he did not know about the matter and that he would look into it. He mentioned that the programme was held to announce their month-long campaign, which aims to work for a planned, risk-free city.
