Joy Reidenberg, Great talk at the ACS Conf and we all really enjoyed your stories at the dinner table during the banquet! Thought you might enjoy this guys monkeys muzzle. Obviously more going on in his mouth & throat producing these sounds, but wouldnt it be fascinating to learn if sperm whales have this flexibility in their phonic lips and can create various sounds shaping them within their long nostril passage to the their lips. The spermaceti organ not only amplify the sound as an acoustic lens, but may shape the sound like with the humans mouth, tongue and throat??? (Also, Uko Gorter has an excellent illustration of inside workings of a sperm whale, see: ) Also, Chris Gabriele told me a story about getting down with a singing humpback whale in a vertical head down posture. When the whale slowly rotated around with its blowhole facing her the sound increased in amplitude significantly. From her description it seemed the bony nares resonant the sound louder and channeled it in a directional manner? Anyway, great talk and thanks again! Best, Tom K. PS Ive added a few more comments below.
