Originally released in 1994, this album from Model 500 aka Juan Atkins shows the producer at his most versatile and intriguing. Some 20 minutes of the album are made up of versions of title track Sonic Sunset, from the utterly frantic Calm Mix of to the even more energetic Cave Mix. The Third Wave Mix, however, is the pick here, all mellifluous acid lines and grinning melodies. Neptune is a slower affair, reminiscent of Kraftwerk (is that a hint of Robots we hear?), taking us on a deep journey into space, while the 18-minute epic I Wanna Be There is unmistakeably classic.
