Juan Carlos Siguenza, a senior at Falls Church High School, has been selected as a recipient of a Posse Foundation scholarship, in partnership with the University of Wisconsin-Madison, of over $165,000 to pay expenses for four years of college. Siguenza was nominated for the scholarship by Falls Church High career center specialist Renee Foster. Candidates must be recommended to the Posse Foundation for their leadership and academic performance. In nominating Siguenza, Foster said, “He’s the type of student I’ve stayed here the last 14 years for, to make sure opportunities don’t pass him by. He deserves all the positives that are sure to come his way because he’s earned it. Juan Carlos has the ‘it’ factor.” Posse scholars must go through a rigorous application process after they have been recommended. If their recommendation is accepted, they go through multiple interview panels and must demonstrate leadership, academic scholarship, and the ability to work as part of a team. Siguenza, one of 1,600 nominated for the scholarship, became one of 150 semifinalists before being selected as one of 22 finalists for the scholarship. He has earned a GPA over 4.3, taken numerous Advanced Placement (AP) classes, and been involved in school activities as a leader and volunteer. Siguenza plans to double major in international business and foreign languages at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Since 1989, the Posse Foundation has provided public high school students with extraordinary academic and leadership potential who may be overlooked by traditional college selection processes with the opportunity to attend college as part of a supportive, multicultural team—a Posse—of 10 students for four years with full tuition paid. Posse has sites in nine U.S. cities, including Washington, D.C.
