Juan Williams noted Sunday on Fox that an important fact that fuels the anger of many white people at the protests in Ferguson over Michael Browns death to has to do with the high murder rates among black young men, murders largely done by other black young men, not by police. He noted -accurately- that murder is the main cause of death for young black men between the ages of 15 and 35, much higher than among white young men. But there are important items that are ignored as such statements are made: First, the murder rate among white young men and black young men who are poor and urban are nearly the same (researchnews.osu.edu/archive/badcomm.htm) Second, murder rates among white young men and black young men in poor rural areas, while much lower, are virtually the same (columbia.edu/~rs328/Homicide.pdf). How, then, is the murder rate among Black young men in America so much higher? Race is not the primary determining factor. And poverty alone is not the determining factor. Urban poverty, however, seems to be a hotbed for murder. And there are far more black young men living in poor urban areas than white young men. There are far more white young men among the rural poor. Those more likely to commit or be the victim of murder are the urban poor. Young men are not more violent simply because they are black.
