Juanita Toerien Horn 40 mins · Johannesburg Everyday I read comments on this page where people complain that they cannot find employment. I always feel empathy for each one and try to give constructive advice or at least give sympathy. BUT I have advertised 2 positions over the last year and the way applicants conducted themselves made me realise that there are people who will never find employment because YOU DO NOT WANT EMPLOYMENT! Herewith tips for when you apply for a position (and my comments are directly related to my personal experiences in this regard). Applicants ranged from whites, blacks, brown, Afrikaans and English speaking, ages 18 to 45. (1) Spelling. Use spell check or ask a friend or family member to read your CV before you send it. Not everyone is good at spelling but if you do not even make use of a program (that is free by the way) to assist you, then I cannot trust you to correspond with my clients. You are either lazy and will not go the extra mile or you just take no pride in what you do. (2) Do not address the recipient as ‘Hi’. If this is how you are going to address me, how are you going to address my clients? Dear Sir / Madam is the way to address anyone in the corporate world in a letter. (3) Do not address the recipient as ‘Darling’ or anything similar when you speak to them. This is extremely unprofessional. Again, how are you going to address my clients? (4) This goes with no. 3. Do not assume that because I am a female that I am not the boss. In any event you are supposed to treat everyone with equal respect, whether it is my cleaner, my receptionist or me. (5) Don’t tell the recipient in your covering email about your problems with previous employers and you therefore don’t trust people. You make me feel as if I have something to prove to you and I don’t. (6) When an interview is scheduled, do not bombard the recipient with emails and questions prior to interview. Do that at the interview. (7) Not attending an interview. Not only does your actions confirm to me that you are unreliable, but you have also wasted my time. (8) Very basic salary. If this is what you are offered when you are not employed, take it, it is better to earn something than nothing. Unless of course you stay too far and your expenses will be high. In time you will earn more money as the company grows and when you’ve proved yourself. For those of you who made none of the mistakes above and emailed me in advance to reschedule the interview due to an emergency, or who were employed in the meantime and therefore cancelled the interview, thank you! I wish you all the best! Without even interviewing you, I believe you are an asset to any employer. For those of you who are serious about finding employment, make use of the tips above. For those of you who are guilty of the above, good luck…
