Jud Joyce, a sports specialist for the Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) office, was named Tooele School Districts Volunteer of the Month for teaching physical education to Dugway Elementary School students. The school’s music and P.E. programs were eliminated by budget cuts. Children get recess, but no structured P.E. Beginning this year, Joyce got K-6 students moving once a week, partnering with Taylor Schofield, who teaches 3rd and 4th grade. “It gives MWR an opportunity to expand what we were doing, and to have an outreach program with the school,” Joyce said. Larry Abraham, assistant principal for the Dugway K-12 schools, taught P.E. years ago and appreciates Joyce’s volunteerism. “He’s doing a great job with the kids,” Abraham said. “Education is supposed to be centered around the whole child, including social interaction and physical. He’s volunteering his services to provide that for these children. We really appreciate him. He’s a hoot of a guy.” Schofield, who joins Joyce to give the students a fun workout, praised Joyce. “He’s doing an excellent job with all the kids, and getting them prepared with the skills they need to learn,” he said.
