Judge John Hodgman Rules via The New York Times Magazine Kevin writes: My wife insists that our pet beagle’s name, Zooey, is actually spelled simply Zoe. Our dog’s name does not rhyme with toe. She has searched the Internet for proof that she is correct, but fails. Please help bring me justice. I don’t know what’s wrong with the Internet in your house — maybe you sabotaged it in order to drive your wife insane? But it took me all of 0.40 seconds, per Google, to confirm that Zoe is a valid spelling of your dog’s name, and as far as I can tell long predates the Deschanel-via-Salinger “Zooey.” Of course in all legal systems, whoever named the beagle chooses the spelling. But that does not change the fact that you don’t know what you’re talking about and owe your wife an apology.
