Judge slams polygamy Source: The National, Thursday September 5th, 2013 SOME Papua New Guinea customs such as polygamy and payback must be done away with, Deputy Chief Justice Gibbs Salika says. Salika, sitting in the Waigani National Court yesterday, said this when hearing a case in which a woman pleaded guilty to killing her husband’s second wife. “Polygamy is one which is causing problems,” Salika said. “The business of having more than one wife is probably the root cause of all these. “There will inevitably be jealousy in such cases. It is up to our law makers to consider these things.” Esther Bui Kandato admitted to manslaughter charges for the death a woman in 2010. Kandato, from Liagam district in Enga, was charged with manslaughter in the incident that occurred on the night of Dec 4, 2010 at Ela Beach in Port Moresby where Kandato stabbed the female victim in the chest with a kitchen knife. The victim was rushed to the hospital but died from loss of blood. Kandato’s lawyer asked the court to impose a non-custodial sentence as Kandato had paid compensation and made peace with the deceased’s family and that she had a sick seven-year-old child to look after. Kandato said she was sorry for what she had done and apologised to the victim’s family and her own family. The prosecutor, from the public prosecutor’s office said that a custodial sentence was necessary to deter others as such an offence was not the first of its kind. But Salika said imposing a custodial sentence was like a “band aid approach” and postponed sentencing to Sept 6.
