Judges 21: 25 In those days Israel had no king; everyone did as they saw fit. March 26--The record of 465 year period of the kings is found in 1&2 kings, 1&2 Samuel, and 1&2 Chronicles. We read the interesting story of Elkanah, a Zuphite: i/e a man from Zuph. Zuph meaning honeycomb in Hebrew. He was a A Kohathite Levite. Ok then, he was from the priestly tribe of Levi, what is a Kohathite? The Kohathites were one of the four main divisions among the Levites, descended from Kohath, a son of Levi. The land of Zuph was a district in which lay Elkanahs city, Ramathaim-Zophim. It was probably so named after Zuph (1 Chr. 6:26). Zuph and the city of Ramathaim-Zophim are mentioned with Mount Ephraim, suggesting that they shared a similar locality, north of Judah. see map 1 Sam. 2 He had two wives; one was called Hannah and the other Peninnah. Peninnah had children, but Hannah had none. That was his first big mistake. I never dreamed that wives would be jealous or tease each other, but evidently it was possible !! 6 Because the Lord had closed Hannah’s womb, her rival kept provoking her in order to irritate her. 7 This went on year after year. 8 Her husband Elkanah would say to her, “Hannah, why are you weeping? He was clueless as husbands tend to be. Why should we care? Well, he was to be the father of the last judge, Samuel. He just did not know it yet.
