Judo Grand Prix, Tashkent 2014 DAY 3 -78kg | +78kg | -90kg | -100kg | +100kg The Judo Grand Prix, Tashkent 2014, produced a stirring conclusion as the heavyweights went toe-to-toe at the “UZBEKISTAN” sport complex on Saturday. The Uzbek crowd saw the women’s -78kg and +78kg categories and the men’s -90kg, -100kg and +100kg categories compete for the remaining five gold medals. The IJF World Judo Tour continues over the next weeks as the Asian leg gains momentum in Abu Dhabi with the Grand Prix, which this year has become a Grand Slam. Abu Dhabi will be followed by Qingdao GP and Jeju GP, before the end of the year, which will be marked by the Judo Grand Slam in Tokyo. But in the meanwhile, the IJF will hold the Junior World Championships in Fort Lauderdale, FL, next week. After a long period with no score and only penalties given to MARANIC, POGORZELEC finally immobilized her opponent for ippon. The first bronze medal fight saw the top seeded athlete of the competition and Astana’s silver medallist, Luise MALZAHN (GER) facing Laia TALARN (ESP), who had finished first at the Pan-American open in Santiago last July. Halfway through the contest, MALZAHN seemed to be more active and more dangerous for her opponent but was still not capable of scoring. Nevertheless, as TALARN was twice penalized, the GERMAN took the lead. In an o-soto-o-soto attempt from both sides, MALZAHN was finally able to score a yuko that she kept until the end winning a well deserved bronze medal. The second bronze medal fight was between two medallists of last week’s Grand Prix in Astana, the Gold medallist Natalie POWELL (GBR), and bronze medallist, Assunta GALEONE (ITA). A little more than two minutes were necessary to POWELL to secure the bronze medal. After having scored a first yuko, she immobilized GALEONE for ippon. Only penalties were distributed during the first bronze medal fight between Sarah ADLINGTON (GBR) and Gulsah KOCATURK (TUR), to the advantage of the British fighter, who won after the Turkish athlete was disqualified for passivity and not respecting the limit of the fighting area. Only 11 seconds were necessary for Franziska KONITZ (GER) to win against Zarina ABDRASSULOVA (KAZ) with a superb uchi-mata. NAGOROVA, Aydana (RUS) MEN -90kg: After Bronze in Astana, Iddir (FRA) confirms in Tashkent The final opposed the silver team world medallist (Chelyabinsk 2014), Kirill DENISOV (RUS) and Astana’s bronze medallist, Alexandre IDDIR (FRA), who did not offer a single chance to his opponent with an outstanding reverse sode-tsuri-komi-goshi for ippon. Sherali JURAEV (UZB) and Walter FACENTE (ITA) met in the first bronze medal contest. Supported by his public, JURAEV was ready to bring one more medal for Uzbekistan but this was not FACENTE’s plan, who launched a powerful left-handed tai-otoshi, that gave no chance for the Uzbek, for ippon. In a nice demonstartion of fairplay, the public applauded the Italian. In the second bronze medal contest, Hatem ABD EL AKHER (EGY) was rapidly penalized with two shidos against Komronshoh USTOPIRIYON (TJK), giving the lead to the Tajik athlete. Just before the last minute, USTOPIRIYON was also penalized two times and then a third time, changing the lead and giving the bronze medal going to the Egyptian. NHABALI, Quedjau (UKR) -100kg: Gold for Egypt and Darwish The final of the men’s -100kg opposed the winner of the first edition of the Havana Grand Prix this year, Toma NIKIFOROV (BEL), and the bronze medallist of last week at the Astana Grand Prix, Ramadan DARWISH (EGY). None of the two athletes were really able to show something interesting until the very last seconds of the fight when Ramadan DARWISH scored a yuko, giving him the first place. The first bronze medal fight opposed the winner of the Zagreb Grand Prix last September, Adlan BISULTANOV (RUS), and the world number seven and Tyuman Grand Slam Bronze medallist, Martin PACEK (SWE). The strongest action came after three minutes of tactical fighting when the tall PACEK launched a sutemi-waza but for no score and just 17 seconds before the end of the match, after a major mistake from BISULTANOV, PACEK could apply a o-soto-gari technic for ippon. When the two athletes, Ramziddin SAYIDOV (UZB) and Jorge FONSECA (POR), entered the stadium for the second bronze medal fight, the public which was a little asleep, suddenly woke up and both fighters gave really good reasons to cheer as they were totally engaged in an incredible combat. But in this incredible ‘battle’, FONSECA was several times penalized for false attacks and SAYIDOV could control the score until the last seconds, despite some very strong and powerful attacks from the Portuguese. Both athletes literally felt into one another arms at the end of the bout. The first bronze medal fight of the last category of the day, saw Barna BOR (HUN), winner of the Astana Grand Prix last week, and the former member of the top five in the world Islam EL SHEHABY (EGY). Slowly coming back after a long absence, EL SHEHABY is still not at his best. Barna BOR won the bronze with an easy looking uchi-mata, which is far from being evident when you have the Egyptian in front of you. The second bronze medal contest saw the victory of Elyor MASHARIPOV (UZB) against Andrey VOLKOV (RUS).
