Julana L. Schaub says, I want to share what we do for our kids - TopicsExpress

Julana L. Schaub says, I want to share what we do for our kids each year to encourage reading (and maybe to help any other parents out there who need an extra push in this area!). We set up an Iditarod dog race on our wall. We call it the IDIDAread instead though! We cut out all the 27 stops or check points for the dogsled race and put them up on the wall (construction paper with the name written is all we do). Then we tape a string from point to point, all the way from Anchorage to Nome. We try to set it up on the wall just like the actual map (its easy to find one online). We also cut out pictures of sled dogs and sleds to use. You start with one dog with your sled. (I like to put them on cardboard, so they last the whole race.) If you read a chapter (or if younger kids complete simple age-appropriate books), you get to move to another checkpoint. Once youve reached the end (Nome) you get to start all over, with another dog added to your sled! We give the kids an incentive, like $5 for every time they go the whole race, or something of their choosing that is inexpensive, like a special meal. We keep track of every book/chapter that is read in a notebook. We list the book, date, and the checkpoint they are on. Its really a FUN way to encourage reading at ANY age! We do this for about a month (you choose the time frame). I hope this is a fun tool any mom/dad can use! Its also FREE if you just print pictures off the internet. Best wishes from a Michigan mom! - Lana
