Julian Bond and Cathy Fussell posted this and it is fascinating. Not surprising, but fascinating. Read it, especially if you are a fan of Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings (hope I spelled it right) who wrote The Yearling. Knowing who Paula Deen is helps, too. We always had maids (no one called them housekeepers in the 1940s and 50s before I left home). My mother was a tolerant woman and I never felt she put them down.She defended them if needed. But the prejudice was always there. They rode in the back seat, not the front, for instance.
