Julian Fact presented by the Warm Hearth, and the answer to our last post: In November of 1880 the San Diego Union reported news of a successful apple harvest in Julian. James Madison came to San Diego from the east coast in search of land for raising horses, in Julian he saw that the soil and climate would be perfect for growing apples. James Madison and Thomas Brady planted Julians first apple trees. After mining in Julian stopped, many of Julians prominent families planted large apple orchards. In 1907 Julian apples once 8 gold medals at the Jamestown Virginia Exposition.
