July 1, 1963 - The old lightship Columbia, No. 88, came home Monday morning with fanfare and ceremony to become a major attraction of the Columbia River Maritime Museum. The 55-year-old ship, saved from the wreckers by citizens here who donated money to buy it for $21,000, sailed from the Seattle Coast Guard base with a crew of 20, mostly Astoria citizens under command of Capt. Kenneth McAlpin of the Columbia River Bar Pilots’ Association.
