July 15 at 8:53pm · I spoke to the BOE at the tax hearing today. Took my best shot at explaining that the tax hike is unnecessary and neither are the furlough days. The Governor approved, in his 2015 budget, over $314 Million to eliminate furlough days. We are getting $33,850,000 from State, local and Federal Funds. If the new Superintendent can construct a $33 Million budget, he would still have $850,000 in the bank. If more funds are needed, I suggested TANs (Tax Anticipation Notes), they are low interest and tax exempt. The BOE has already passed a borrowing resolution. Also, Georgia Law allows a waiver of up to 5 school days if inclement weather forces the school year into the following week and it puts an unnecessary burden on the budget, so do not have makeup days and save that money. If the tax increase happens, look out for next year if they call for a referendum to allow them to exceed the 20 mill cap. Can you say dry well boys and girls ? -Ed Mills Brenda Hitt Kelley: Believe there was an Austerity Grant of $1 million that was released mid year back to SC school system and an expected $300,000 for agreeing to become a charter system. Would that not make up the $1.3 deficient?
