July 17, 2013 To the editor of the Star: I am puzzled by your take on Governor Daniels’ attempt to rid state-funded universities of anti-American, left-wing propaganda. It is one thing for the state to censor citizens from expressing opinions. It is quite another for the Governor to try to stop employees of the state from spewing hate-for-America in universities funded by the people of Indiana. It is quite proper that the Governor sought to oversee, finally, this “academic abuse” that goes on, apparently, unabated. Most of us are quite aware that our tax dollars are being used to pay the salaries of people who have a left-wing agenda and spin U.S. history in as negative light as possible. In this case, the Governor was quite properly exercising a role of stewardship and many of us are quite fed up with overpaid, under-worked, left-wing nut-job “professors” who hate our state and our country. If “academic freedom” truly existed on our campuses, then conservative speakers could express their opinions without fear of retribution. That simply is not the case here or virtually anywhere in academia in this country. I am quite glad the Governor saw the hateful, slanted bilge in our public universities that passes for “instruction” and sought to correct it!
