July 18- It’s a tough time to fish if you don’t like heat. We’ll get a little break this weekend but it’s back into the mid-80s next week. And that brings up a reminder about releasing fish. Surface temperatures are high and, especially for muskie you need to torpedo them deep. Trying to revive a stressed fish in your livewell is a death sentence so get ‘em back in quick. They’re still active using bucktails and lipless cranks, I’d also start tickling the weedtops with a creeper about now, too. Walleye are deeper in stunted weeds or rocks and live bait is still best on a jig. Bass are headed out, too with smallies in deeper weeds and gravel. Worms are best. Largemouth are grabbing topwaters and creatures in the pads and slop. Working with 8-16-foot weeds can bring in good catches of perch and bluegill. Hit the inside for perch and weedtips for the gills with small live bait or plastic presentations. And don’t forget a bobber while you’re casting. Crappie are still hanging around deeper wood, cribs and brush piles with the usual techniques still working. They’re moving a lot so, you should, too. And I’m not mentioning pike because no matter where you’re fishing, they’ll find you. That’s it for now, good luck on the water!
