July 18, 1993 Day 38 – Kantishna and Denali National Park. This morning we rode in a horse-drawn wagon to Wonder Lake, hoping to see Mt. Denali (“The High One”) in the morning light. It took us an hour and a half to travel the four miles to Wonder Lake behind Walter and Wade (the horses). It was an enjoyable ride in the sun with blue skies overhead. Unfortunately, the Alaska Range of mountains, including Denali, were hidden behind a dense haze which we were told was partially due to forest fires northwest of Denali. The snow-covered peaks also blend into the low clouds making it difficult to see them. We passed a few human critters along the road, but, sadly, we saw no animal critters. We were back at the roadhouse at noon and ate our picnic lunch on a bench beside Moose Creek. After lunch, Janice returned to our cabin to needlepoint. I took a short bicycle ride, read my book down by the creek and then photographed the interesting buildings and beautiful wildflowers around the roadhouse. After a dinner of baked halibut, we made reservations for a morning flightseeing trip around Mt. Denali and went back to our cabin to read our books.
