July 18th. CHINOOK UPDATE Hi We left Port Vila yesterday afternoon and knocked off 193 miles in the first 24 hrs which was a pretty good performance considering we all got sick within a few hours and there were some substantial seas, not to mention the rain and 40knt winds. Steve developed diarrhea as well as general not feeling well, I had diarrhea to go along with the heavy head cold which had started a few days earlier. Malcolm is severely unwell with diarrhea and chills etc and David is the fittest with only nausea to deal with. We were planning to take a northerly route around the first reef but winds are not cooperating and we have decided to make the Grand Passage which is 17 nm wide and south of the Isla del Surprise reef formation, Wonder how it got its name. Winds are dropping which is good as around 7kts SOG will get us there shortly after dawn. Auto helm / tracking severely misbehaving turning us 60 degrees when first engaged and gradually correcting as the GPS takes over guidance, Ok when lots of room and not much wind.
