July 2, 1908: Thurgood Marshall is Born On this day in 1908, Supreme Court Justice and American civil rights icon Thurgood Marshall was born in Baltimore, Maryland. Beginning in 1936, Marshall served as counsel for the NAACP. He won 27 out of 32 cases heard before the Supreme Court. His greatest achievement with the NAACP was his victory in the landmark 1954 Supreme Court case Brown v. Board of Education. In 1967, President Lyndon Johnson nominated Thurgood Marshall to the Supreme Court. On October 27, 1967, Marshall was sworn in, becoming the first African American to serve on the nation’s highest court. Thurgood Marshall would serve on the Court until his retirement in 1991.
