July 26, 1861 - Following the disaster that was the Battle of Bull Run, Lincoln appoints George B. McClellan as commander of the Army of Northern Virginia (soon renamed the Army of the Potomac). McClellan, seen as one of the more promising generals in the Federal armies, would prove to be a meticulous yet fickle commanding general. Exemplary at training and logistics, but lacking in decisiveness and tactical planning. McClellan, though immensely popular with his soldiers, did not earn many friends in Washington. Failing to live up to his "Young Napoleon" nickname, McClellan would be replaced the following year.
