July 28th 1945 – A U.S. Army B-25 bomber crashes into the 79th floor of the Empire State Building killing 14 and injuring 26. William Franklin Smith, Jr, piloting the bomber, became disoriented by the dense fog and started turning right instead of left after passing the Chrysler Building. The plane crashed between the 78th and 80th floors. All those aboard the bomber, plus eleven people in the building died. One of the survivors, accidentally set a Guinness World Record for the longest survived elevator fall. Betty Lou Oliver was put in an elevator by rescuers. The rescuers were not aware that the elevator had weaken cables and she plunged 75 stories down. youtube/watch?v=cUlWpqLsOVs aerospaceweb.org/question/history/q0311.shtml web.archive.org/web/20060317041607/guinnessworldrecords/content_pages/record.asp?recordid=53746
