July 4/7:00 p.m. - 151 years: The battered and torn Confederate army has been snaking its way south and through the mountain passes into Maryland all day after bitter and costly defeat. The Union held the field, but also suffered horrendous casualties. In all, 27,000 Rebels and 23,000 Union soldiers were lost in the battle. To darken the day further for the South, news has come today that Union General Grant has finally broken through in Vicksburg, Mississippi, and now the old river is completely in Union hands. Still, it would be nearly two more bloody years until the war ended.
