July 4th Minding Your Thoughts Job 41:32 He maketh a path to shine after him; one would think the deep to be hoary. The Lord is speaking with Job about Leviathan. This is an amazing creature with which Job must have been familiar. One of this creature’s attributes was that the water would become almost iridescent in its wake. This would cause someone who saw this glow to think that the deep water was “hoary” or grey, not dark as deep water is normally. Sometimes we see things that make us think things that are not based in fact. Have you ever walked up on two or three people speaking and as soon as you arrive they become quiet or the group suddenly breaks up? The first impression often is “They were talking about me”; probably not. They may have been speaking about a confidential matter concerning one of them, or perhaps the conversation simply reached its conclusion, or maybe they were gossiping about someone else and your appearance caused them to realize they should stop. Who knows? But what we see affects what we think. Many times someone even stays away from church because they think that everyone else is thinking ill of them for something that may have happened in their life. Frankly, most people in the church probably don’t even know what happened, and the ones who do are probably so wrapped up in their responsibilities at church that they are not spending their time thinking about one person. If they are thinking of that person they are probably glad they are at a church that can help them. But because of portrayals on TV, or pride, or simply an overactive imagination people sometimes seem to think that everyone is thinking about them. I am going far afield; let’s get back to our devotion. As stated before, what we see directly affects our thinking. So as a good steward of your own thought life make sure that what you see is first of all appropriate in the sight of God, make sure it is based in reality and not just an illusion, and make sure that what you think about what you see is balanced with Scripture, prayer, and common sense. May the Lord Bless and be pleased with your thought life today. William T.
