July 5, 1863: 7th TN at Monterey Pass in Pennsylvania / JT Present Hill’s corps constructed defenses at the Monterey Pass of South Mountain to protect the rear of the army while the First and Second Corps crossed through on the way to Hagerstown. Bad weather continued to hamper the retreat and the water level in the Potomac River had risen to more than twelve feet deep. The pontoon bridges Lee had used to cross into Maryland in June were destroyed yesterday by Union cavalry from Harper’s Ferry. Lee had sent orders ahead to construct a new pontoon bridge at Falling Water, downriver from Williamsport.
