July 5 Posting tomorrows devotion tonight. Today we will focus on the second part of John 13:3 – “Jesus knew that He had come from God.” A key component of identity is who am I? Where did I come from? Most of us have an inherent desire to know where we are from because that gives us a strong sense of who we are and who will become. Infants early on begin to identify with a familiar face and derive comfort or distress based on the presence or absence of that face. Children need to bond with their parents in order to be balanced and stable emotionally. Knowing who we belong to is a powerful statement of who we are. I often imagine that I am walking down a long corridor and there are hundreds of people with megaphones yelling at the top of their lungs all kinds of different things: You are stupid. You are great. You are a loser. You are too big. You are too overweight. You are just right. The noise is deafening. It is difficult to collect my thoughts. My sense of direction is off. Like a compass spinning, it can become easy for many voices to define my sense of well-being and my direction. Scripture says that you are made in God’s image. Scripture says you are not an accident and that you come from God. You don’t have to rely on the thousands of other voices define who you are and where you come from. The key anchor to Jesus’ identity was his relationship with His Father. He knew who he belonged to. He knew where he came from. When the blaring sirens began going off he was undeterred. The Pharisees and people yelling “crucify him, crucify him.” The soldiers placing a crown of thorns on his head. The Sanhedrin striking him and saying “prophesy to us who struck you.” Inside Jesus was a still, small voice saying You belong to me. You are mine. You are come from God. In El Salvador, you will face exhaustion, potential personality conflicts, possible illness, or other challenges. It is so important that you know why you are there and who you belong to. In life it is even more critical that you know who you belong to. Do you know Jesus? Do you know that you come from God? Do you know that you are created in God’s image and not an accident? You have purpose. You have identity. You have an identity from God and not from the world. Prayer Focus: Contemplate and pray how knowing that you belong to God can be a strength in your life. 1. Who do I let tell me who I am? 2. Who do I belong to? 3. How can use my own relationship with God to minister to the Salvadorans? Pray for People: 1. Pray for the medical care that will be provided and for the practioners. 2. Susan DeNapoli 3. Stefani Diloreto 4. Danyelle O’Dell
