July 6, 2011 Hyperthermia to Fight Cancer Tracy Hampton, PhD JAMA. 2011;306(1):30. doi:10.1001/jama.2011.912. Text Mild hyperthermia can boost the efficacy of certain cancer therapies by blocking a DNA repair pathway that helps protect tumor cells from the effects of radiation and chemotherapy, according to research in cell lines and tumor models (Krawczyk PM et al. Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A. doi:10.1073/pnas.1101053108 [published online ahead of print May 9, 2011]). Increased temperature (41°C to 42.5°C) causes the degradation of BRCA2, a protein involved in DNA repair, and allows radiation and chemotherapy to more effectively combat tumor growth.
