July 9th 1956 Tom Hanks was born to rule. This film by Paul Green-grass is well crafted, delicately made piece of art. After watching the film my mind thanks to the illustrious Tom Hanks connected with another film where he played the role of a captain albeit a military one, Capt Miller the films was Saving Private Ryan and made by nine other than the great Steven Spielberg. Tom Hank is remembered and acknowledged for his stellar work in Films like Sleapless in Seattle, Philadelphia , Forest Gump, Apollo 13 , Saving Private Ryan, and now Captain Phillips. He film brings forth another exceptional actor to the fore, Barkhad Abdi. To act as an important polar character in a film shoulder to shoulder with a giant as Tom Hanks is no mean feat, in my opinion Barkhad Abdi did justice to the screen time he shared with the maestro and emerged as a professional of promise. The film is so well handled that any accolade showered on Paul Green-grass falls short of what he deserves. The clash of cultures, meshing of harsh realities, changing of value systems, and the emergence of common human element of being just what we all are at the end of the day, humans and not nationalities with tags on our collars was brilliantly portrayed. The film on a lighter side, it is lamented came late, much after the Piracy Surcharge was mooted by carriers across the world for ferrying across these dangerous waters. If I were a marketing director of a liner container company having significant proportion of my revenue coming from passing through the Red Sea, and around the Horn of Africa, I would gift this Christmas DVDs of this brilliant work, to my top customers with a note, better than the Pirates of the Caribbean, this one on familiar tides. This is a must watch movie. Paul Green-grass has done away with niceties like a pilot being present when a ship casts off , but that is splitting hair and most disgracefully so I admit, he made a fantastic movie.
