July Complex Evening Update August 16, 2014 The Whites Fire now totals 28,650 acres and is 12% contained. Today, the fire spread rapidly in the area of Eddy Gulch Road and Sawyers Bar Road, and spread to the south and southeast. Firefighters worked to contain several spot fires that started in the upper Shadow Creek area, east of the Eddy Gulch Lookout. Crews will work through the night to hold the fire on the south flank. If weather permits, strategic firing operations may be used overnight to help secure the fire edge in this area. Crews are constructing direct line where the fire entered the Russian Wilderness to the east. Indirect dozer containment lines are being built and improved from Eddy Gulch Lookout to Black Bear Summit, then to the intersection of Eddy Gulch Road and Sawyers Bar Road. Firefighters are continuing structure defense for all points from Idlewild through Sawyers Bar, including Whites Creek and Eddy Creek. Eddy Gulch Lookout has been evacuated.
